Students urged to use library

PARENTS were urged to send their children to the library every month as a way to discourage them from using their school holidays for non-beneficial activities.

Director of Language and Literature Bureau Dr Mataim Bakar called on parents to continue sending their children to the library on a monthly basis after an encouraging number of students participating in the school holiday activity programme.

"This is to discourage them (the youth) from wasting their time doing non-beneficial activities such as hanging out at the mall and watching television for hours," he said during the closing ceremony of the fourth term school holiday activities yesterday.

The two-week activities saw some 100 members of the Public Library Youth Club visiting several government agencies in the country. The director described this as something beneficial and appropriate for youths to be aware of the function and role of government agencies.

"By learning the functions, roles and responsibilities of government agencies, it will enable us to expand our knowledge," he added.

Guests at the event were then entertained to a number of performances by the Public Library Youth Club, showcasing their talents in singing, acting and public speaking.

Nurrafizah Samad from the Public Library Youth Club kicked off with her poem performance titled Indahnya Bahasa Melayu (Beautiful Malay language).

The students from Orang Kaya Besar Imas Subok Primary School then took the stage to perform a musical performance which include the use of an ancient flute-like wind instrument called ocarina.

Norasyik Saleim took top honours, while Fatin Hazirah Hj Ahmad and Noreen Faezah Hj Abdul Mutalip claimed the second and third places respectively. Consolation prizes were also awarded to seven participants.

The poster drawing competition themed "Saving for the future", aimed at educating and fostering the habit of saving.

The event took place at the Balai Pameran of the bureau's library.
