Dental hygiene programme for all schools in Sultanate

A NEW standardised method of tooth-brushing will be taught during the "Daily Fluoride Tooth-brushing Programme" that will be implemented to all levels of schools in the Sultanate in the near future.

This was disclosed by Dr Mary Cheong Poh Hua at yesterday's certificate presentation ceremony on the "Standardisation of the Tooth-brushing Technique" held at the Health Promotion Centre.

The Head of the Oral Health Promotion Unit told The Brunei Times that it was essential to have a standardised technique of tooth-brushing to avoid confusion and ineffective brushing.

"Even the nurses and teachers themselves are confused," said Dr Mary Cheong.

She added that this was one of the primary motivation of organising the seminar and workshop held on November 24 and 26 in the Serbaguna Hall, Ministry of Health for the standardisation of a tooth-brushing technique to be taught during the tooth-brushing exercises in schools. "The seminar and workshop was aimed to standardise the tooth-brushing technique amongst dental nurses to avoid any confusion during the demonstration of tooth brushing to Primary and Secondary Schools children," said the Chairperson of the ceremony, Hjh Shahrina Hj Mohd Hashim in her welcoming address.

It was found during this workshop that new techniques of brushing had to be developed due to the changes of structure and size of teeth as we grow older. It was then decided to implement two new methods of brushing one for primary teeth and permanent teeth for the pupils under Primary Four and those above it respectively.

The Senior Staff Dental Nurse expressed hope that the prevalence of caries and periodontal diseases will be reduced with the aid of effective tooth-brushing.

Dr Mary Cheong concluded by stating that the seminar/workshop was well attended and had received positive responses from the participants.

Apart from the welcoming address, a presentation on the briefing and resolution of the standardisation of the tooth-brushing technique was also presented by the doctor.

This was followed by the certificate presentation event for the 50 dental nurses who had attended the "Standardisation of the Tooth-brushing Technique" seminar.

Present to hand out these certificates was the guest of honour, the Director General of Medical Services of the Ministry of Health, Dr Hjh Norlila Dato Paduka Hj Abd Jalil.
