Winners of art, handicraft contest receive prizes

WINNERS in the respective categories of the 41st Art, Creative and Handicraft Competition 2008 received their prizes yesterday as a recognition to their talents in a ceremony held at The Mall, Gadong.

The guest of honour was the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher) Education at the Ministry of Education who presented prizes to winners in the creative, upper secondary, lower secondary, upper primary level categories, among others.

A total of 150 schools nationwide took part in the contest which started March this year. Participants competed in six categories for both lower and upper secondary level, which include poster, portrait, handicraft, to name a few. Meanwhile at the primary level the contestants are further subdivided into three groups "A", "B" and "C".

Category "A" is for pupils from Primary 4 to 6, "B" is for primary 1 to 3 pupils whereas preschoolers were in category "C".

The secretary of the organising committee, Rabiah Hj Othman told The Brunei Times this year saw an increase in the number of participants, with over 1,000 pupils and students taking part.

It's good to see so many of the students beginning to take interest in art she said, as it was one of the objectives for organising the competition, which was to inspire youths to become talented artists.

Organised by Co-curriculum Education Department, winners for each category also saw their art works exhibited in the five-day exhibition being held from November 1 to 5, 2008.

These activities are organised as to motivate students to take interest in art. "We even invited five local artists during this five day exhibition who happen to be students of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and other tertiary institutions to show to them that their talent in art could be continued on even at tertiary level," said Rabiah.

One of the artists Md Rosydi Roseli taking Bachelor of Education in Arts in UBD lauded the organiser's efforts in conducting the competition and setting up exhibition booth for the winners. "In addition to giving an incentive to students to pursue their interest in art, it also demonstrates to the public that there are actually young talents among these contestants," he said.

Given time, encouragement and training, it is not impossible that one day local artists could stand tall against their international counterparts, he added.

The sentiment was echoed by Hadiarlimas Kassim another local artist who said that art students could go far in their studies as a number of his peers have received government scholarships. (DKR1)
