$90,000 donation for a great cause

IT WAS not just a night of music and merriment but also of caring and compassion towards special members of the community as Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah presented donations amounting to $90,000 to three charities during the Toyota Classics concert held yesterday evening at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas.

Featuring a top-class performance conducted by the Vienna Operetta Orchestra to serenade the distinguished guests, the night reminded everyone of the spirit of giving as all the proceeds of the concert were handed over to the Learning Ladders Society, Smarter Brunei and Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam.

The donations were accumulated in part by the generosity of several firms, among which was NBT Sdn Bhd, which was presented by its director, Hj Ahmad Morshidi Pehin Orang Kaya Di-Gadong Seri Di-Raja Dato Laila Utama Hj Abdul Rahman, who is also the chairman and managing director of The Brunei Times, and Toyota Motor Asia Pacific by its president, Ryoichi Sasaki. The night commenced with touching rendition of the national anthem performed by the 40-member orchestra, whose repertoire consisted of classical music and dance. Songs by featured vocalists Soprano Izabela Labuda and Tenor Michael Suttner were also part of the concert's line-up.

Her Royal Highness and the other guests were also given another treat as the 14th edition of the Toyota Classics showcased Malaysian singing sensation Amy Mastura who gave a performance fit for an encore with hit songs Malam Ini and Cinta to compliment the world-renowned Vienna Operetta Orchestra.

In his remarks, NBT Managing Director Ninan Chacko said that the concert was a perfect setting for NBT to meet its customers and an opportunity to do their bit in giving back to the community.

The Toyota Classics 2008 tour made its way from Bangkok on October 30 to Kuala Lumpur and Manila on November 1st and 5th respectively, before the tour arrived in the sultanate. Their next performance will be in Taipei, Hanoi, Seoul and Mumbai. (MJH1 & ODM1)
