Local chicken eggs free from melamine: Govt

THE Agricultural Department under the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources assured yesterday that local chicken eggs and animal feed are free from any melamine contamination.

It may be mentioned here that in Hong Kong traces of melamine has been found in chicken eggs due to contamination of chicken feed.

To ensure that chicken eggs and fodder are free from any contamination a nationwide inspection has been conducted by the Agriculture Department. Samples of local chicken eggs and feed were sent to the AgriFood and Veterinary Authority (AVA) in Singapore for further analysis.

According to the Agricultural Department press release, the result was a negative verifying that no traces of melamine have been found in chicken eggs and feed in the country. The public, therefore, has been assured that there was no need for concern.

Apparently Hong Kong eggs contained traces of melamine and a report has shown that Chinese-made food products containing traces of melamine have turned up as far away as South America.

Melamine, a chemical which makes watered-down milk appear richer in protein has caused kidney stones in thousands of Chinese children hospitalised September this year after being fed with tainted baby formula.
