TWENTY-two students from the Brunei Darussalam Institute of Certified Accountants (BICPA) and FTMS Global Incorporated Academy garbed in their graduation robes were handed their certificates yesterday at the first graduation ceremony for BICPA-FTMS Accountancy Academy.
Ten graduates were awarded the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) while 10 were graduates of Certified Accounting Technicians (CAT) and two graduates for Diploma Infocommunications Technology at the ceremony held at the Rizqun International Hotel.
The graduates were handed their certificates by the Permanent Secretary of Higher Education, Hj Mohd Daud Hj Mahmud, the guest of honour who also officiated the ceremony.
In his speech the permanent secretary congratulated the students on their achievements in obtaining their certificates. "I hope this success will open up more opportunities in your career choices and future developments."
He also lauded the active participation of the BICPA-FTMS Accountancy Academy as an entity of the private sector who have taken the objective to promote the accountancy profession in Brunei Darussalam by providing relevant and quality professional accountancy education.
"With that, I am also happy to note that the milestone they have achieved has made them the first institution in Brunei Darussalam to be awarded the ACCA Approved Learning Partner (ALP) Gold Status," he said.
The Gold Status approval recognises an educational institution which has met a range of challenging performance targets, covering its overall management, and more specifically, its ACCA course management and delivery.
The permanent secretary added that to date, there are 235 students enrolled in classes for ACCA and CAT at the academy and urged more students to move towards this career path.
"I hope more people will take the opportunity to study the professional accountancy education with the academy in Brunei Darussalam," he said.
A short welcoming speech was also given by the president of the academy, Pg Hj Moksin Pg Hj Yusof, who also took an opportunity to congratulate the students on their success.
He mentioned that some of the students who graduated were also students with full-time day jobs.
To ease the burden for these students, the academy president said that "the academy is now looking into a provision of full-time courses for the convenience of the students".
Amongst the guests attending were the parents of the graduates who were also treated to an afternoon high-tea by the academy.
The BICPA-FTMS Accountancy Academy was first established in February 2002.
